Hello! My name is Philo Hagen (figh-lo hah-gen). I’m originally from Seattle which explains my love for the great outdoors, then I spent quite a few years in San Francisco which explains my love for big fat Mission style burritos. Now I’ve been living in Los Angeles for more than a decade where I love the sunshine, the al pastor street tacos, and the way this megacity supports all of my oddball interests. Perhaps you already know me in person or from one of my previous and now defunct web projects like hooping.org – the world’s #1 hoop dance / hula hoop website with 2 million+ annual visitors for more than a decade, queerday.com – a top LGBTQ+ news blog for several years running, or East Coast / West Coast – the original bi-coastal best friend blog where Choire Sicha (NYC) and I (SF at the time) shared way too much personal information and even won a Bloggy for it! Whether you already know me or not though, welcome!
Over the years I’ve worn a variety of hats including Non-Profit Management do gooder at places like Marin AIDS Project and The West Hollywood Recovery Center, freelance writer for a variety of print and online publications including the San Francisco Chronicle, modern hoop dance performer and instructor spinning things up across the country and beyond, to that psychic guy clueing folks in on the unseen forces in their lives, homes and businesses. Probably my biggest claim to some kind of fame though would be my short film Gotta Hoop which won numerous awards and was featured by The New York Times and other publications. You’ll usually find I’m up to several things at once though and I prefer it that way.
In my spare time these days I’m dating, working on that book, tinkering on some music I may decide to share someday, roller skating 10+ miles a week, or refurbishing the Airbnb I own with my best friend way out in Wonder Valley. Then again, I might just be chilling at home watching TV and eating some grapes. To learn more about my psychic llife go here. To dive into the paranormal side of all that go here. For the history behind my hooping life go here. And everything else – including all the previously lost content from over the years – will all be showing up here eventually. You can also find me on Instagram rather often, Facebook rarely, and BeReal daily. Thanks so much for dropping by.
